Spring is in the air!
Early spring is a great time to get in the garden and start planning for the growing season. In our experience, waiting until April or May to start "spring cleaning" in the garden or landscape is usually too late.
Find those pesky winter annual weeds that have been hanging on all winter and pull them out before they go to seed. If they are given the chance to flower, they'll just make more seeds that will become next year's crop of weeds. Mulch! Spreading mulch around daffodils and other early spring flowers while they're in bloom can be tedious work and can damage the sensitive blooms. Spread a light layer of mulch now and avoid trampling over active flower beds with a wheelbarrow.
Now is also a great time to cut back last year's ornamental grasses. If you wait until they break dormancy, you risk cutting off new growth which can hurt (or even kill!) certain types of grasses.
This year, we have an expanded product list to assist with all of your spring preparations. Our flagship Paydirt Compost is almost ready for sale and will help give your garden an early spring boost. Additional styles of compost including Coarse Compost (a yardwaste-only compost) and Commercial Compost (made with local food scraps) are in production now and will be available later this spring. Use any of our compost products to enhance your soil quality, improve drainage, and supply your plants with the organic matter and microbial activities that will help them thrive!
When it comes to mulch, our Everyday Mulch is a fantastic multi-purpose mulch that helps slowly add organic matter in to the soil as it breaks down. We make it here on-site using locally-sourced landscape debris! We also have Mulch Fines, a new offering that provides a beautiful finish look to any bed and is especially effective in your vegetable garden. Hardwood Bark Mulch is a tried-and-true mulch that gives your beds a finished, commercial look.
The best gardens and landscapes practice preventative maintenance, which in this case means pretending it's spring before the plants know it is. Give us a call today to let us know how we can help you with your early spring projects, and as always, send us photos of your garden work!
